Camilla Parker Bowles has been known, for many years now, as the 'other woman' - the one who brought an end to Prince Charles and Princess Diana's marriage. A look into their historical relationship showed that it was not simply the scandalous affair that most people believed it to be.
Today, Charles and Camilla are married, but it was not a smooth journey to marital bliss. There has been heartbreak, drama, and even tragedy in the building of their love story. Let's take a look back, shall we?
How they met
The royal met Camilla (then) Shand at a polo match in Windsor in 1970. The attraction was immediate. They fell in love and dated until 1971. They took a break from each other when Charles joined the Royal Navy.
Marrying another man
In 1973, Camilla could not wait any longer for Charles. She got married to Andrew Parker- Bowles, who had once dated Prince Charles' younger sister, Princess Anne. According to an old classmate, Lynn Redgrave, Camilla "wanted to have fun and also wanted to marry well because, in her mind, that would be the most fun of all."
Meeting another woman
Four years later, a heartbroken Prince Charles returned from the Navy to find his love had gotten married. He then met 16-year-old Diana while he was dating her older sister, Lady Sarah McCorquodale. He later broke up with Sarah and, in 1980, he began to court Diana.
A royal wedding
Charles and Diana got married in 1981. Camilla attended the wedding, even though Diana did not want her there.
A reignited affair
In 1986, Charles and Camilla resumed their affair.
Three years later, Diana claimed to have confronted Camilla at a party. She infamously said to her husband's affair partner:
Camilla, I would just like you to know that I know exactly what is going on between you and Charles. I wasn't born yesterday.
Camilla then replied:
You've got everything you ever wanted. You've got all the men in the world to fall in love with you and you've got two beautiful children. What more do you want?
"I want my husband," Diana supposedly replied.
In 1992, Charles and Diana separated after proof of his affair with Camilla came to public light.
In 1995, Camilla and her husband, Andrew announced their divorce. Diana also admitted to having had an affair with James Hewitt in that year.
A tragic accident
Princess Diana passed away in 1997 in a tragic car accident.
Charles and Camilla
A year later, Charles introduced Camilla to his sons, William and Harry. In the meantime, they both decided to keep their relationship away from the public eye.
In 2005, the couple announced their engagement. They married in April that same year.
The pair celebrated their 10th anniversary in 2015. A few months later, Camilla, who the royal family was starting to warm up to, joined them on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Trooping The Colour ceremony.
Since then, Camilla and Charles have made several public appearances together.
