Serena Williams has always been pretty open about her pregnancy and journey toward motherhood. Many draw inspiration from her strength, both in her personal and in her professional life.
Considering her success on the tennis court, it's hard to imagine this athlete being defeated at anything. But, as we all know, motherhood is one of the most unpredictable aspects of life.
So when the 36-year-old mother of one opened up to Harper's Bazaar UK about struggling with being a mom, mothers all over the world completely understood.
The 23-time Grand Slam champion was very open about dealing with postpartum depression after giving birth to her daughter, Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr., last year.
Not only did she experience some issues in the final stages of her pregnancy and during childbirth, Serena also had to struggle with the next step: being a mother.
She told the magazine;
I think people need to talk about it more because it's almost like the fourth trimester, it's part of the pregnancy. I remember one day, I couldn't find Olympia's bottle and I got so upset I started crying . . . because I wanted to be perfect for her.
Any woman who has experienced PPD can relate to Serena's story. Being a new mom can conjure up all kinds of confusing emotions including, as in Serena's case, feeling sad and down about seemingly ridiculous things.
In inspite of this, the sports star is still determined to be the "best mom I can be," which is really all we can do as parents.
A lot of things are unexpected and confusing when you become a mom.
However, it's important that you remember that being dedicated to doing the best for your child is enough.
We may not always get it right but we can all learn from Serena that it's okay to be imperfect.
