Andrea Bocelli is grateful to his mother for choosing to let him live instead of ending her pregnancy like the doctors wanted.
A difficult situation
Why would a mother be advised to get rid of her own baby and how often does this happen? Sadly, more often than you may think.
According to the CDC, 652,639 legal induced abortions were reported in 2014. This meant there were 12.1 abortions for every one thousand pregnancies. Andrea's mother was supposed to be one of those who would likely end their pregnancy while following doctor's orders.
The child was born
The Italian singer once gave a shout out to his mother, Edi, during one of his concerts in Italy. He stopped midway and told the story of how a woman was admitted to the hospital with appendicitis while she was pregnant.
The singer revealed that, after doctors applied some ice on her stomach and treated her, they recommended that she consider aborting the pregnancy. They told her that her child would be born with a disability otherwise.
But the young brave wife decided not to abort, and the child was born. That woman was my mother, and I was the child.
Andrea said he was convinced that his mother made the right choice and hoped his story would encourage other pregnant women, who find themselves in confusing and difficult situations, to persevere.
Soon after he was born, the singer was diagnosed with congenital glaucoma, which made him partially blind. By the time he was 12, he lost his vision completely after he had been hit on the head during a football game.
They were almost never born
There are quite a few celebrities whose moms considered abortion for different reasons.
American football quarterback Tim Tebow revealed in his book, Through My Eyes, that he was almost never born because his mother suffered some complications that caused doctors to advise her to abort the pregnancy.
Other celebrities with similar stories include Justin Bieber, whose mother got pregnant at 17, Celine Dion, The Game, Cher and Nick Cannon.
