Surrogacy is one of the most inspiring things a person can do for another, but this mother took things a step further by volunteering to give birth to her own grandchild even though she was 61.
A mother's love
61-year-old Kristine Casey made one of the biggest sacrifices ever when she decided to give her infertile daughter the gift of motherhood.
Kristine had already undergone menopause 10 years earlier, but she was able to get pregnant with this baby via IVF.
Chicago Tribune reported that Kristine carried full term and finally gave birth to her first grandchild, Finnean, after a C-section.
Sara Connel, Kristine's daughter, was unable to carry a pregnancy to term. Her egg and her husband Bill's sperm were combined and used for the IVF procedure. This means Sara and her husband are trully Finnean's biological parents.
Speaking to the Tribune, Sara expressed her appreciation that someone in the family was willing to do such an amazing thing for them. She thought it was "extraordinary" for her mother to make such an offer.
Bill was a bit worried at first, as he was concerned about Kristine's age and whether it was safe. He said;
I didn't want us to subject ourselves to another very risky, possibly devastating, scenario. Infertility is one thing, but putting your mother-in-law in danger kicks it up to another level altogether.
After speaking at length and discussing the idea with the Reproductive Medicine Institute, the family decided to take the plunge.
As for Kristine, who is the mother of three daughters, she considered the opportunity a 'spiritual calling.' She had attended a life coach session at one time and was inspired to do something meaningful. That was when she wrote a letter to Sara and Bill, offering to be their surrogate.
She assured them that it was okay if they were not on board. For her, it was not just about doing something that makes her happy. "I could find other things to do," she said.
The risks and concerns of surrogacy
While there are some medical risks when it comes to surrogacy, which mostly involves pregnancy-related issues like gestational diabetes, preterm labor, and so on, the emotional risks can also be concerning.
There have been instances where the emotions of the surrogate mother are so intense that they may feel upset about not taking the child home in the end.
However, this was not an issue with Kristine, who said she was not the least bit tempted to take home the child. Plus, she still has some form of maternal role to play in Finnean's life as a grandma, so she did not think she would be missing out.
From the very beginning, the moment I've wanted is the moment the baby is in their arms. I've been clear since after my third child that I didn't need to have any more children, and as much as I will be delighted to be a grandmother, I don't want to take a baby home.
Kristine changed her daughter's life in a massive way and thanks to her selflessness, Sara and Bill get to have a beautiful baby boy.
