Becoming a mother is a huge responsibility, but it is worth every bit of the stress. Any woman that desires to be a mother should be given a chance at motherhood, no matter her condition.
Christine Lumilan, a woman who lives in Toronto, has given birth to her bouncing baby boy despite her many health challenges.
Christine was born with mild cerebral palsy, and later, she developed diabetes and polycystic ovaries. In her own words:
”I didn't think I could have a baby.”
That is why, at the age of 39, when she unexpectedly got pregnant, she knew it was a miracle and a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. She knew she might never get another chance.
Still, Christine was very scared. A woman with her disabilities did not seem to have very good chances of delivering safely.
Luckily, a family friend introduced her to Dr. Anne Berndl, a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Dr. Berndl runs Sunnybrook’s Accessible Care Pregnancy Clinic, which was opened in 2017. Berndl and her staff believe that every woman, despite any disability, should be given a chance to taste the joys of motherhood.
Since their inception, they have helped 56 women with a variety of limitations to achieve their dream.
The clinic accommodates for disabilities with wheelchairs, larger exam rooms, Hoyer lifts and scales for wheelchairs, and the birthing suite, which is dubbed the “corner office suite”, is bigger to accommodate wheelchairs and larger family members.
Dr. Berndl also tries to eradicate the stigma that comes with being disabled and having a child. Christine tearfully said:
“I've heard, 'Are you OK with taking care of the baby? Maybe you should give him up for adoption' … because I can't run after him.”
Thankfully, Dr. Berndl came to her aid. Christine delivered a bouncing baby boy named Dawson Lumilan on the 28th of November, 2018, through a C-section.
Before Dawson arrived, the clinic set Christine up with an occupational therapist to help her prepare.
Christine has revealed that she wishes to be an independent mother, and though it has been challenging, she enjoys every bit of it.
What a compelling story that teaches us that we should never lose hope despite our situation. We wish Christine all the luck and hope she has fun with her baby boy.
