January 16, 2019

Low-frequency hearing loss

This is a very rare form of hearing loss that happens in just about 1 in every 13,000 people.

It is also called reverse slope audiogram because, where moderate hearing losses are the inability to hear high-pitched sounds, the opposite happens here.

Thus, sounds on 2000 Hz frequencies and below may not be heard by the patient, like the hum of a fridge.

According to Very Well Health, it is usually caused by a mutation in the Wolfram Syndrome gene, also known as WFS1. This gene provides instruction for producing a protein called wolframin, which regulates calcium cells and can cause diabetes, optic atrophy and deafness when a disorder affects it.

Other causes are viral infections, sudden hearing loss, renal failure, Meniere’s disease, intracranial pressure, and spinal anesthesia, among others.

How did it happen to the woman in our story?

The strange morning discovery

According to the Daily Mail, a Ms. Chen, from China, has been diagnosed with an inability to hear men.

One fateful day, Ms. Chen woke up and could not hear her boyfriend.

The alarmed woman rushed to the hospital for help, and an Ear-Nose-Throat specialist discovered that she was experiencing reverse slope hearing loss.

However, for Ms. Chen, the specialist’s diagnosis was very weird.

She had been fine the previous day and only gone to bed early because she was feeling nauseous and had a ringing in her ears.

More so, the patient was shocked that she could hear the female doctor perfectly but not any man.

Dr. Xiaoping, the ENT doctor, noted:

“She was able to hear me when I spoke to her, but when a young male patient walked in, she couldn’t hear him at all.”

Upon inquiry, it was learned that Ms. Chen has been straining herself, recently working late.

Thus, medics believe that fatigue and stress may have caused the sudden hearing loss.

  • Mixed hearing loss;
  • Conductive hearing loss;
  • Sensorineural hearing loss (SHL);
  • Unilateral hearing loss, high-frequency hearing loss;
  • Sudden hearing loss.

This tells us we still got a lot of learning to do!

We are glad Ms. Chen found a doctor who knew about low-frequency hearing loss; However, It would be to our advantage if we got better informed more about hearing disabilities.
