Dad Saves The Life Of His Teenage Son With The Use Of A Defibrillator

August 15, 2018

A quick-thinking man has managed to restart his son’s heart after he collapsed during sports class and is now calling for serious actions to be taken.

Can public defibrillators save lives?

A new project is in the works and its goal is to ensure there are public defibrillators across the UK available to people who need it.

Not a lot of ambulance services have adequate information about these devices, which can restore function to the heart by providing an energy electric shock. So when paramedics are called upon after someone has a heart problem, the patient may not be directed to a place where the emergency responder can access a publicly available defibrillator.

This was what inspired the British Heart Foundation (BHF) to develop a plan to make defibrillators available for the public. They estimated that thousands of people who suffer cardiac arrest outside the hospital will have more of a chance to survive.

Stuart saves his son

15-year-old Ethan Askew was in sports class when he began to feel uncomfortable. He ended up collapsing and suddenly stopped breathing.

His father, Stuart, who worked in the school as a premises manager had only just installed a publicly available defibrillator a couple of days prior. He told BBC that he was just leaving a meeting when two students ran to him to say his son had collapsed.

Stuart rushed to his son and as he got closer, he saw that someone was performing chest compression on Ethan. It took that split second to see that his son’s problem was heart-related. And the terrified das knew that this was something very serious.

Luckily enough, the school had previously applied for a community defibrillator from the British Heart Foundation. It was recently delivered and Stuart explained that it was only two days earlier that he had put batteries in it. He had no clue that the first life it would save was his son.

Stuart remembered the defibrillator and immediately called for some students to get it. He was able to use the device to revive his son that day. The ambulance arrived a few minutes later and Ethan was taken to a hospital.

Stuart is grateful to the BHF

The British Heart Foundation and Microsoft have combined forces to ensure that some certain public areas would have a defibrillator on hand in case of an emergency.

Stuart is very grateful for this initiative and following his experience with his son, he had no doubt in his mind that many lives will be saved.
