5 Surprising Things That Can Cause Memory Problems And Possibly Alzheimer's Disease

To live a healthy and satisfying life, it's important to make choices and decisions as preventative measures. For example, Alzheimer's and dementia usually affect older people. But did you know that there are certain things you may or may not be doing that increases that risk? 

There are a few things that can impact your memory negatively. Let's take a look at some of them.

1. Unhealthy sleep habits

According to research, not sleeping enough over time can contribute to the development of brain proteins that have been known to be related to Alzheimer's. While regular exercises can help loosen up these amyloid proteins, quality sleep is what actually gets rid of them.

2. Past medical history

Studies have shown the connection between the herpes virus and the development of Alzheimer's diseases. 1000 human brains were studied and, in those who had Alzheimer's, the patients had twice the levels of herpes virus 6 compared to those who died of other causes. The researchers noticed that these herpes viruses seem to interact well with Alzheimer's-causing genes.

It has also been shown that a history of cardiovascular disease can put a person at risk of cognitive decline and Alzheimer's disease.

3. A concussion

If a person has a family history of Alzheimer’s, a trauma or blow to the head may ignite cognitive and brain changes that are related to these conditions. According to a study, middle-aged adults who had experienced at least one concussion, and who are also genetically predisposed to get Alzheimer's, performed worse than others in a simple recall test. It showed that these slight brain changes could have a significant effect on their memory.

4. Loneliness

Elderly people who experience the feeling of social isolation or loneliness have a high risk for Alzheimer's. In a study, older people who had an increase in the Alzheimer's-related amyloid protein were found to be 7.5 times more likely to describe themselves as feeling lonely as those whose scans were negative for the protein. In addition, having less intellectually stimulating activities is also one of the risk factors to watch for.

5. Eating habits

Experts have advised that people who want to reduce their chances of Alzheimer's should adjust their eating patterns in order to avoid overnight eating and follow a low-carb diet. Avoiding taking in meals overnight, i.e, giving your body at least 12 hours of fasting times, and eating healthier can trigger it to burn ketone and fuel your brain.

Getting regular check-ups a way of being sure your health is fine. It is also very important when preventing a wide range of diseases as we get older.
