Magic is a practice negated by Christian religions, among other occultic movements like cultism and witchcraft. However, we are past the days of burning people on stakes or stoning them to death.
We live in an era of mercy and grace, of discoveries and knowledge. However, a church in Poland seems to be still practicing burning, though they are not hurting people this time but books. Harry Potter books to be precise.
Harry Potter is a fantasy series that many people have come to enjoy. However, an evangelical group in Poland called the SMS From Heaven Foundation published pictures in which they showed their burning of Harry Potter books in Gdańsk. The pictures were posted on their Facebook profile.
The SMS From Heaven Foundation is based in Koszalin, North-West Poland. Captioning the post, they quoted Bible passages from Acts, saying:
”Many of those who had practiced magic collected their books and burned them in front of everyone. So they calculated their value and found it to be fifty thousand pieces of silver."
Many Christians criticized the post saying Harry Potter is a children’s book that teaches important lessons about fighting against evil and practices ‘good magic.’
The Catholic Dioceses in the area has distanced itself from the ‘unfortunate’ event but explained that, even though they do not support book burning, the high rise of occultism and black magic in Poland is concerning.
It is important to note that the Catholic Church did not sanction this action. It was a priest who told his members to bring items they associated with witchcraft and occultism to throw into the fire.
While people and organizations are allowed to have their beliefs, the destruction of property and knowledge should never be the last resort.
