7 Weight Loss Tips For People Over The Age Of 50

February 16, 2018 01:26

Losing weight and getting fit is usually easier when a person is younger. Men and women in their 50-s who are trying to get healthy may experience some difficulties mainly due to major shifts in hormones and bad habits that have taken decades to mould

However, at the end of the day, losing weight in whatever age is all about having a good diet and an active lifestyle. Here are some great tips to help.

1. The right exercise

Sometimes, you may be tempted to want to ditch exercise because of various reasons like muscles or joint pain. But this is hard to achieve your weight loss goals without exercising. You can try some low-impact activities like swimming, walking or biking to keep you moving. You are aiming to build muscle mass and to keep that metabolism going.

2. Spicy food

Some studies have shown that cayenne pepper helps to increase metabolism and decrease cravings. So, consider eating more food that contains it.

3. Take your time

A 2015 study showed that kids who take their time with their meals are often less likely to suffer childhood obesity. When children take a pause of 30 seconds between each bite, they would very likely stop eating when they are no longer hungry. Sometimes, emotions and stress, not hunger, cause us to eat more. Try taking a page from this childhood tip. Use smaller plates and chew longer.

4. It's all about quality

Instead of counting calories and obsessing about the quantity of food you eat, how about you focus more on the quality. Research supports that if you eat more whole foods than processed foods overall, weight loss is more likely to be a success.

5. Take a few bites

Some people experience situations where they have a severe sugar-loaded food craving but because they spent the whole day convincing themselves not to take a bite, they end up eating a massive portion later that day, or the next, or the next weekend. Instead of banning all 'bad' food completely and risk bingeing, you can have little bites during the day and not feel like you are missing out on something.

6. You have to plan

No matter your age, meal planning is always the best idea. Having your food for the day or week prepared will keep you from going out to eat all the time.

7. TV- Off

People who eat in front of the TV when it's turned on are likely to consume 13 to 25 percent more calories than when the TV is off. In fact, there is every likelihood that you will stop eating only when your favourite TV show has ended instead of listening to your body and knowing when you're full. Switch off the TV and practice what is referred to as mindful eating.
