53-year-old Lewis adopted Titus when he was just a puppy. He loved his dog so much that he often called Titus "my other half." But because Titus is a pit bull, there was a certain stigma that affected him.

Lewis said that, in the three years the dog lived with him at his apartment complex, neighbors would often report them to building management. Poor Titus was judged for his breed and it got so bad that Lewis would only walk him in the middle of the night when everyone was asleep.

One day, when Lewis was at work, his daughter and grandson came to visit. The 10-year-old boy took Titus for a walk but on their way down, they encountered a neighbor. Lewis said he was not really sure what happened and suspected that Titus may have been trying to protect his grandson because the dog ended up nipping the neighbor's finger.

From time to time, Lewis visited Titus at the shelter and would always promise him that he'd find a new place where they could live together once again. Even as he made those promises, Lewis was not 100 percent sure that time would ever come. One of his worries was that Titus would be adopted by another family before they reunited.
