Being a mother is not always a walk in the park. There are so many things to do and decisions to make both for you and your child. However, this does not mean you have to be miserable all the time.
By taking a look at some of the things happy mothers have in common, you may want to adopt a few to bring some pep back to your steps.
1. Get some air
If you are a stay-at-home mum, you may soon realise that you have not been out of the house for hours or even days. Just stepping outside for a few minutes can do wonders for your mood.
2. Accept help
When it comes to your child, it's easy to develop an obsession for doing everything on your own. Let someone else help you out and go out every once in a while.
3. Get intimate
You are more than just a mum. While that job itself is incredibly powerful, remember that you need to feel like a woman too. So, be sure to enjoy those special moments with your man from time to time.
4. Sleep when you can
Sure, the infant stage does not always make this possible. But when you get to a point that an 8-hr night becomes doable, take advantage of it.
5. Get moving
Exercising really does wonders for the mind and body. You don't even have to hit the gym. Schedule a 10-minute dance session once a day and you will be feeling revitalised in no time.
6. Be kind
Sure, motherhood is about giving and it might not make sense for you, at first, to go about showing generosity to people outside your home when you are already tapped out inside. But doing something nice for people really does make you feel good. Knowing you were helpful and made someone day is sure to lift your spirits.
7. Practice contentment
Constantly comparing yourself to others really is the thief of joy. It takes so much energy to look at what other's are doing and feeling miserable about what you have. Accept who you are, and appreciate what you have been blessed with.
8. Have friends
Having someone or some people you can talk to about the daily travails of life as a mum can be therapeutic. You are reminded that you are not alone and you can even rant to them until you feel better.
9. Look ahead
Every moment, whether good or bad, will pass. When it's good, reminding yourself of that fact will encourage you to take advantage of it and bask in the beauty. When things are tough, you take solace in the fact that it will not last forever.
10. Forgive yourself
You will not get it right all the time. You will make mistakes. You may even do things that others think make you a 'bad' mum. But you cannot be too hard on yourself. Forgive yourself and move on. No one is perfect and as long as your kids know they are loved, that's really all that matters.
At the end of the day, happiness does not happen by accident. Sometimes, you may need to put yourself first and you should always make sure your needs are being met. Your family will be much happier if you do.
