They say that elephants never forget. The truth of this assertion is shown in a captivating video of two elephants, named Shirley and Jenny, reuniting after over two decades apart.

Jenny was brought from Asia to the United States at a tender age to join the circus. When she arrived, she bonded with Shirley, who seemed to take on a mother figure in the young elephant’s life. The years passed and the two were separated. However, after 22 years, it was time for old friends to be together once again.

It was the year 2000, and it took a long drive through two states to bring Shirley to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee. When they two met for the first time in a long while, the keepers looked on cautiously. As a safety measure, an iron railing separated the two.

However, no one expected what happened next. The recognition was immediate and distinct. Unable to get closer to each other, they settled for interlocking their trunks.

The keeper, who had been with Shirley, was in tears as he gave her the last bath he ever would. Speaking to the camera, he explained that, even though he didn’t know the first person to ever put chains on her, he was glad to be the one to take them off.

It was indeed a tear-jerking moment as the two animals reached for each other. Through the night, long trumpeting could be heard.

The documentarians were shocked to note that, in their attempt to get touch each other, they had bent the iron bars of the railing.

It was then that a man managed to inch the railing open so they could truly be together. It was nothing short of breathtaking as they embraced. It is impossible for your breath not to hitch as you watch this video.

The reunion goes a long way to prove, once again, that animals are a lot like humans when it comes to feelings. They may not be able to express themselves as we do, but they feel pain and joy in pretty much the same way.

This is why it is inhumane to be cruel to any animal. Spread only love!
