The pup, identified as Toggle, had suffered two deep wounds on his shoulder and was in so much pain that he could not walk.

For several days Toggle was away from his mother at the shelter. Sadly, his mother could not be taken along because she had four other pups to cater for.

However, he soon recovered and was reunited with his mother and other siblings. The rescue team reported that the mother dog will be sprayed when her pups are grown.

How to help a stray dog

If you ever find a stray dog, it would be unfair to walk away without helping. Here are tips on how to offer help:

1. Put your safety first: When approaching the animal, avoid sudden movements. An animal that feels cornered is already alarmed and may behave erratically. If you can, restrain the animal, use a muzzle or simply stay away from the teeth area.

2. Get the animal to the right authority: If the animal is not injured, lure him or her with strong-smelling food or a toy into a vehicle and get him or her to the shelter closest to you.

3. Call for back up immediately: If the animal is terribly injured or is showing signs of extreme violence, then you should call for assistance from professional animal handlers.

If you wish to take the animal home, you should make sure that you are prepared for the task. Come with a box or kernel, depending on what is most appropriate. A leash, some food, and blankets would come in handy too.

Get the animal to the vet first to ensure there aren't any ailments you may be unaware of. Make sure you are not breaking any animal control laws. It is best to consult an animal agency on the matter to be sure.

No pet should have to go through abuse. A word of caution to pet owners is that you must be sure that you are genuinely willing and able to take care of an animal. This means that the environment must be conducive and that you have the resources to create a loving, comfortable home.
