Having a little dog for a pet seems cute. However, many owners do not realize the various dangers such dogs may be exposed to. Luckily, this article is about to give you an insight.

At first, she dismissed it as Lulu play-fighting with the other family dog, but when the barking did not stop, she took a look outside and was shocked by the sight that greeted her.

A predatory bird, most likely a hawk, was trying to make away with Lulu and had secured the poor dog as prey in its talons. Charged with gusto, Cecilia began screaming:

“Get off my dog. Get off my dog!”

Armed a pillow, she hit the bird three times before it released her dog. As it flew away, Cecilia observed that it had torn straps around its legs.

This led her to presume that the bird was also someone’s pet and, therefore, the Celis family warned others to be on high alert.

Thankfully, the vet declared that Lulu had not suffered grave injuries and would be fine.

What you should note about small dogs

This story points out the fact that small dogs can easily become prey to birds and other prowling carnivores, but there are other things your small dog may be susceptible to.

1. They are prone to accidental injuries. Some small dogs could be less than 7 pounds, and that means they have fragile bones.

This is why they should not be hugged too tightly, and structures should be put in place to aid climbing so that they don’t fall.

2. Also called ‘toy dogs,’ many little dogs tend to have genetic problems, like teeth and joint issues, so they may experience challenges with chewing specific food and may require frequent vet visits.

Despite being so small, they usually live long so having a little dog may be more expensive than having larger ones.

3. They can get too cocky. Though they are small, many have huge personalities, and they can pick fights with the wrong dog in the park so be alert.

4. Other pets may bully them at home, so you need to be watchful.

5. They can get lost. Small dogs can be so tiny that they go missing, even in the house. Experts suggest tying bells in the collar as a counter-measure.

No matter what kind of dog you wish to get, do well to get educated on all the essential details about the breed and how to care for it appropriately.
