Magic With A Difference: Magician Performs His Tricks To An Audience Of Shelter Dogs And Their Reaction Is Heartwarming

Date December 25, 2018

We all know there are a lot of domesticated animals in the United States, but how many of them are pets and how many reside in animal shelters?

According to the ASPCA, about 6.5 million pets, with approximately 3.3 million being dogs and an estimated 3.2 million being cats, enter animal shelters in the U.S. yearly.

However, this number has decreased in recent times, and dogs have had the highest decline.

Other statistics show that around 1.5 million companion animals are euthanized on a yearly basis. This is a significant decline from the estimated 2.6 million in 2011, with higher adoption rates being one of the contributors.

Things are looking up for animals in shelters. However, more work has to be done to make them feel at home, loved and protected.

Dogs enjoy magic, too

TV network TBS decided that animals should partake in some holiday cheer as well, and partnered with a magician to perform magic tricks for some rescue pups.

The magician, John Stessel, performed for the eager dogs at the Town of Hempstead shelter, located in New York City, giving them a chance to wow potential adopters with how adorable they were.

Stessel revealed to Dodo that he had always thought of working his tricks with dogs and described the event as ‘nothing short of incredible.’

He noted the cute reactions of the dogs made everything that much more special.

When the performance was over, the adorable dogs were showered with affection and treats as well.

A video of the performance was uploaded to Facebook and several comments about John’s kind act and the dogs’ priceless reactions flooded in.

With any luck, families will clamor to adopt the super cute dogs, especially after seeing the video.

How to help abused animals

While it may be hard to imagine, cruelty to animals is not a rare occurrence, and it is our responsibility to help these disadvantaged animals. These are some ways to do that.

1. Foster: When you foster a pet, you give them the chance to be taken care of and nurtured while they wait to be adopted by a loving family;

2. Adopt: Adopting a pet from a shelter gives them a second chance at life and happiness;

3. Donate: Kind donations to the animal agencies around are always very appreciated;

4. Volunteer: Lots of volunteering options are available to help these animals, and all you need to do is choose one that suits you best.

Although things are getting better for these shelter animals, more can still be done. Do well to ensure you visit a local pet store or animal shelter, you never know, you could be an animal’s happy ever after.
