It is comforting to see Hollywood actors use their influence to lend a helping hand to charity work, but then there is a star who does more than ‘lend a helping hand.’
Gary Sinise’s track record
Gary Sinise, who is best known for playing Lieutenant Dan in the 1994 award-winning movie Forrest Gump, has become one of the most celebrated philanthropists in the USA. His work has been recognized with the Presidential Citizens Medal, the second highest civilian award in the United States, for exemplary deeds - and it is just one of many awards he has received.
His charity work inclides helping firefighters, war veterans and their families, multiple trips to Iraq, serving as spokesman for American Veterans Disabled for Life Memorial, and raising funds for various military-related causes - a range of work that has made headlines several times.
For instance, in 2013, he donated a $60,000 cheque to the Colorado fire department after the most destructive fire in the state’s history, and it seems there is no stopping him.
Gary Sinise Foundation
Established in 2001, the Gary Sinise Foundation boasts of 233 relief grants awarded to police, firefighters and EMTs, in addition to 162,000 meals given to the nation’s defenders, 70 specially adapted homes available for disabled veterans, over 1000 first responder training grants, more than 400 concerts organized all over the world for the nation’s defenders and their families, etc.
Just last year, the foundation donated one of such adapted smart homes to Sergeant First Class Caleb Brewer, an amputee war veteran. This tells us of the real-life impact the foundation is having on men and women who have served their country faithfully.
Despite the fact that his work has attracted accolades, even a Bradley Award and $250,000 in 2016, Sinise reveals the pure motivation for his goodwill on the foundation’s website:
“After the tragic events of September 11, 2001, I began devoting much of my time supporting the men and women who were deployed in response to those attacks – the brave service members who, each day, protect and defend our great country."
His fans cheer him on
Such good work as Gary is doing is refreshing, and his fans on Twitter are quick to recognize that fact:
