President Donald Trump is fond of goofs when he is the public eye, but when he was in the United Kingdom for an official visit in June 2019, he managed to scale through without raising any eyebrows.

Okay, he goofed a little, but it was nothing major.

Donald Trump touches down in the UK

On June 3, Trump arrived in the United Kingdom with his entourage. Of course, there was a lot of fanfare at the airport, where Prince Charles received him.

When he arrived at Buckingham Palace, he met the Queen amidst a 41-gun salute to welcome him and another 41-gun salute to mark the anniversary of the Queen’s coronation on June 2.

What caught most people’s attention was the weird handshake that the President shared with the Queen. Some described it as a ghetto handshake, and others wondered if he had even bowed, as is customary when meeting the Queen.

The highlight of the 3-day visit was the state banquet, which was attended by 170 dignitaries, at the Buckingham Palace ballroom.

Thanking the royal family for the hospitality, he called Queen Elizabeth, a “great, great queen.”

He added that:

“She is a reflection of the spirit of dignity, duty, and patriotism that beats proudly in every British heart.”

He then proceeded to offer “a toast to the eternal friendship” between the United States and the United Kingdom. Then, just before taking his seat, he did something awkward. He placed his hand on the Queen’s shoulder.

This violates royal protocol, which dictates that no one should touch the Queen. However, if she was bothered by the display of affection, she did not show it.

A look at Trump’s goofs

As mentioned, Donald Trump managed to scale through this official visit without any significant blunder, but over the years, he has said some things that definitely did not go down well with the Royal Family.

In 1997, shortly after Prince Diana’s death, Trump said that he could have slept with her but would make sure she was tested for HIV first. Three years later, he made a more respectful remark.

“I tell you what, I think she’s magnificent. Lady Di was truly a woman with great beauty.”

In 2012, when photos of Kate Middleton sunbathing in the nude surfaced, Trump blamed the Duchess of Cambridge, saying that she shouldn’t have been doing that in the first place.

Meanwhile, when he was told that Meghan Markle had called him a misogynist, he called her 'nasty'. We guess the Queen’s lofty status sure bridled the rather loose tongue of the wide-mouthed President Trump.
