It is always heartwarming to see these select few take it upon themselves to reach out to the less privileged, and one man has taken the pains to do that.

Renowned Indian actor Amitabh Bachchan, who has starred in at least 200 movies, wrote in a blog post this week that he had taken care of some farmers.

How exactly did he ‘take care’ of them? Well, it is no more than the grand gesture of paying off the debts of almost 1400 farmers, which ran up to 40 million rupees, about $560,000.

The 76-year-old explained in the post that banks had issued the farmers with a one-time settlement document and certificate, and the loans were owed to Bank of India, a government-owned bank.

Big B, as he has been fondly dubbed across the country of over 1 billion people, further wrote,

Gratitude leans across to the desire of removing some of the burdens that farmers continue to suffer from...and the inner peace it generates when the desired is completed.

Despite the 2016 promise made by the Indian Prime Minister to boost the country’s agricultural sector by doubling farmers’ income by 2022, the industry is still plagued by declining productivity, primitive farming methods and drought.

Bachchan, who is also the host of the Indian version of ‘Who Wants to Be a Millionaire’, meted out the kind act in Uttar Pradesh, where he was born.

When a farmer came on the show, he revealed more of his plans to help other farmers. He also urged people to take time to try and understand the plight of the average farmer, who makes up at least 50% of the country’s population.

Hopefully, if random people keep stepping up to the plate like this, the suffering of the common man on the street will become a thing of the past. Well done Big B!. You are indeed a national hero.
