Their love story is inspirational. Jimmy and Rosalynn tied the knot on July 7, 1946, in Plains, Georgia. The ceremony took place in a Methodist church in their native town.

Being just 21 and 18 years old at the time, they never broke their wedding vows.

Carter met his future wife the very same day she was born! His mother, who was a nurse, helped deliver the neighbor’s baby and brought her son to meet her.

Jimmy Carter was 3 years old at that time.

In 1945, during a break from the U.S. Naval Academy, Jimmy went back to his hometown. Then he saw 17-year-old Rosalynn and asked her out immediately. After a movie date, there was no hesitation he would make her his wife.

She rejected his proposal, however. Jimmy Carter didn’t plan to give up, so he tried again, presenting Rosalynn a compact with the engraved abbreviation "ILYTG". That meant "I love you the goodest." This time, she could not say no.

That saying was something he often heard from his own parents. It became a motto for the family, as well as for their children and grandchildren.

They have been through it all: moving all the time due to Jimmy’s military service, losing family members, serving one term as the first family in the White House. After retirement from the presidency, they moved back to Plains.

Carter was diagnosed with Stage IV melanoma in 2015, then Rosalynn thought he had just a few weeks to live. However, effective treatment, as well as solid support from his wife, helped him recover.

He later mentioned:

We've been through that ordeal, and I'd say it's brought us even closer together.

They happily raised three sons, one daughter, eight grandsons, three granddaughters, and two great-grandsons.

Jimmy Carter once mentioned that the secret to their long-lasting romance was that:

She was the right person!

Then he revealed the simplest yet wisest key to their happiness:

We decided to give each other plenty of space. I let her do her thing, she let me do my thing.

Their bond is so strong, nothing can break it. Hopefully, they will enjoy many more happy years together!
