It was a night of perfection at the Ken Bruce Show when Andrea Bocelli and his son, Matteo Bocelli, who is also a musician, thrilled fans in a soaring performance of Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’ at the BBC Radio 2 Piano Room.
The soulful song was delivered powerfully. Matteo took the opening verse as his father backed him up softly. The raw emotions of the song were aptly conveyed by the 20-year-old, who evidently suppressed his classical training to sound more like Ed Sheeran.
When it was the elder Bocelli’s turn to take a solo, he did the most remarkable thing: He sang in Italian!
It was absolutely wonderful to hear Andrea Bocelli’s velvety chords strike Ed Sheeran's masterpiece in the romantic language.
What made the rendition even more amazing was the obvious affection between father and son, and the seamless harmony in their voices.
This was their second collaboration. The first was Andrea's most recent single, ‘Fall on Me’, which feature Matteo and was also a mix of English and Italian. These two just seem to have a lot in common beyond facial features.
Interestingly, Andrea has also recently recorded a duet with Ed Sheeran himself. The British singer flew out all the way to Tuscany for the recording where they eventually sang ‘Perfect’ for the album, ‘Divide.’
Over the years, Bocelli has thrilled fans all over the world with his spectacular voice to the point that Celine Dion, whom he partnered with for the soundtrack of the animation Quest for Camelot, described him as having a voice that would sound like God’s if He had a singing voice.
With 15 solo studio albums and 90 million records sold worldwide, he is considered to be one of the few performers who have successfully crossed over from classical music to pop music. Quite an unusual feat!
Matteo, much like his father, was trained as a classical musician and possesses a voice that resonates with a wide range of listeners just as much.
He is obviously set to become a worldwide phenomenon like his father, but, for now, we will savour this exceptional duet of ‘Perfect.’
