Since Meghan Markle joined the British royal family, many people have commented on her unique style and pointed out that, every once in a while, she doesn't mind breaking royal fashion rules. But it seems some people have forgotten that Kate Middleton has bent some royal rules herself.

In 2012, the Duchess of Cambridge became a topic of fashion controversy when she chose to wear a short and bright red dress to mark Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee at a River Pageant.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge accompanied the Queen and other immediate members of the royal family aboard The Spirit of Chartwell, the centerpiece of the flotilla, as more than 1,000 boats floated along the River Thames.

While Queen Elizabeth and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, opted for muted colors in honor of the event, Kate stood out completely in a short red dress, reportedly by Alexander McQueen. To complement her bright red ensemble, the Duchess wore her L.K. Bennett Sledge heels.

Kate chose some fabulous drop earrings, a maritime-themed brooch that featured cute dolphins, and a matching red clutch to accessorize her outfit.

Even though the Duchess looked quite stunning, some people felt that her outfit took attention away from the Queen, who was the reason for the celebration. The DailyMail described her dress saying it was "as striking as it was inappropriate."

Not everyone agreed that the dress was such a bad idea. In fact, some felt it was actually more appropriate when compared to what Camilla wore. While sharing her view, one commenter, Zoe Moon, posted:

The royal family was dressed in red, white and blue. Kate was simply doing her part and blended in with the decor of the barge, which was primarily red. Camila on the other hand wore an outfit that was a little too close in color to the queens white, as well as wearing a hat that was on the same angle as the queen's hat. If anything Camila should be taken to task for her outfit.

As is the case with several royal controversies, there wasn't any official pronouncement regarding Kate's choice that outfit. But whether or not you agree it was inappropriate, the Duchess still deserved props for looking so bright and stunning.
