Xavier revealed that when he was called to the Pont de l’Alma tunnel, he had no clue it was the Princess he was rescuing. He and his "ten-man team" were there in less than three minutes because the scene was close to the Malar fire station where he worked as a duty officer.

As soon as they started helping the victims, Diana said something to Xavier. The fireman said:

‘Diana said to me, My God, what’s happened?' The woman, who I later found out was Princess Diana, was on the floor in the back. She was moving very slightly and I could see she was alive. I could see she had a slight injury to her right shoulder but, other than that, there was nothing significant. There was no blood on her at all.

Xavier said he reassured Diana and urged her to be calm so they could help her. The fireman was convinced that Diana would live as paramedics wheeled her off to the hospital.

She was alive when she was taken to the hospital, he said, but he was surprised to later learn that the princess had passed away. He suspected that Diana had serious internet injuries and she ended up succumbing to them.
