While we cannot really say for sure, we do imagine the Queen's bag contains some crucial staples, like her reading glasses, a handkerchief, mints and a fountain pen.

According to Phil Dampier, author of "What's In The Queen's Handbag: And Other Royal Secrets," the Queen may also pack a crossword puzzle, which she cut from a newspaper, in case she has some free time in the course of the day. Phil also told HELLO! that the Queen sometimes carries a diary and a small camera with her to take pictures.

So, does she carry a mobile phone like most people do nowadays? Well, Phil says no. She does not use a phone very often. Other items that may be found in the Her Majesty's bag include a small mirror, a lipstick, and some important momentoes like a small makeup case that Prince Philip gave her as a wedding gift years ago.

The meaning behind her bags

According to Phil, the Queen can hardly go anywhere without her handbag. It has also been used as a way for her to pass messages and signals to staff and guests.

For example, placing her bag on the table means she wishes to leave an event or engagement in about five minutes.

While on walkabouts, Her Majesty may carry her bag on one side in a specific manner to let her staff know it is time to move on. One of her aides will then join the conversation allowing the Queen to slip away.

Phil is also of the opinion that the Queen may have about 300 bags in all.
