Despite having a high and privileged position in society, he was overwhelmed by the high expectations and demands from the parents.

According to the royal biographer Sally Bedell Smith, Charles was suffering from loneliness and anxiety because of long separations from his mother. The Queen was busy touring around the world, while his son was left with nannies.

Due to performing the royal duties, Prince Phillip’ didn’t give much of attention to his child either. But the impact Duke of Edinburg had on his son was tremendous - he suppressed the son with his forceful and authoritative personality, in an attempt to build his character.

He was afraid that Charles would grow weak and soft and tried to mold him in his own image. Charles was a sensitive child and took criticism close to heart.

Duke Philip interrupted the son: “No, no. You hold them by the stems to dip them in sugar”. After these words, Charles tried to reattach the stems with the feeling of deep despair.

Prince’s father Duke of Edinburg graduated the same school and he insisted on Charles to do the same. The young Prince could not feel more miserable in that “prison.” According to The Sun, he was bullied by the schoolmates for snoring during the night.

He wrote in the letter home: “The people in my dormitory are foul. Goodness, they are horrid. I hardly get any sleep in the House because I snore and I get hit on the head all the time. It’s absolute hell.”

During the mid-60-s, the heir to the throne was engaged in polo, however, he wasn’t the most prominent athlete. During his polo career, Charles experienced numerous injuries, according to Telegraph. He had a degenerative disc in his back that caused pain for many years later, stitches on the cheek and severe dehydration.
