Most royals live their lives guided by rules and traditions, and one of the most common rules states that they do not marry commoners.

While we see many such marriages nowadays in Royal families all over the world, it wasn’t always that way, at least for the Moroccan Royal family, that is, until King Mohammed VI of Morocco broke centuries of tradition.

King Mohammed first set eyes on Salma Bennani in 1999 at a private party. For the royal, it was love at first sight and he expressed his interest, but that wasn’t the case for the redhead.

Salma was focused on her academics. At that time, she was still in college and chose not to answer the crown prince until she was done with school.

Once she was done with school, she then responded to the King’s proposal, but that was not without laying down some ground rules for their union.

For the Moroccan Royal Family, the idea of polygamous marriage is welcomed, but Salma didn’t want any of that. However, that wasn’t all.

Salma and Mohammed broke another royal tradition. Usually, the wives of Moroccan kings were obliged to stay indoors and not participate in formal activities, but Mohammed didn’t buy into that.

Not only did he show her off to the world but also bestowed on her a royal title, something rare for Moroccan Royal Wives. The pair tied the knot on March 21, 2002, and their marriage was blessed with two beautiful kids.

During the course of their marriage, Princess Lalla Salma championed several charities which included HIV/AIDS prevention in Africa and opening a cancer prevention association in Morocco.

Unfortunately, their love didn’t last forever as they are divorced, according to reports.
