The world can sometimes feel like a depressing place. Every once in a while, wonderful things happen that prove to us that kindness still exists. One dad, Matt Logelin, learned the true power of the internet when it became his source of hope after a devastating tragedy.
Matt went from being a happy dad to a heartbroken widower in only a few short hours after his wife gave birth. They welcomed their baby on March 24, 2008. On his now-defunct blog, the dad excitedly announced Madeline's birth and fans were looking forward to many parenting-related posts that would surely come.
However, on his very next post, reportedly titled "Liz", the new dad allegedly announced that his wife had passed away from a pulmonary embolism 27 hours after their baby was born.
The tragic event occurred while Liz was getting ready to go see her baby, who was in the NICU. Madeline had arrived at 33 weeks, which meant she had to spend some time there to get stronger before her parents could take her home. But hours after giving birth, Matt and hospital staff were trying to get the mom on her feet to go see her child when she collapsed. She was soon confirmed dead.
The loss of his wife of 12 years was a massive shock, and having to deal with that while also being a first-time-parent sounded like an impossible feat. But Matt took some solace by sharing his story online with whoever would listen.
Based on his posts, it was clear that his daughter gave him the strength to go on. His determination to be there for her helped him push through the pain as he couldn't imagine her being all alone.
As he continued talking about his experience, Matt's story began to get more popular. His audience was incredibly supportive and helpful. While many offered words of comfort, some actually sent in several baby things to help him through the early years of fatherhood.
In addition, the blog also helped him record some of the experiences that he hoped Madeline would see one day. They told the story of a dad who didn't allow himself to be overtaken by grief but continued to forge on even on during his darkest days.
I want her to know I was out there, doing as much as I could for her, and trying to make her as happy as I could.
Matt has certainly come a long way since this ordeal and, even though it's been more than a decade since it all began, the dad's story of how he stayed strong through such a devastating loss continues to serve as an inspiration to many.
