In an interview with the UK Sun last year, Sgt Gourmelon revealed that as the Princess of Wales was dealing with the shock of the accident, she said:

My God, what’s happened?

These were apparently the last things she was able to say as later that night, she was pronounced dead.

Gourmelon also said that from what he saw at the scene, Diana should have survived.

I could see she had a slight injury to her right shoulder but, other than that, there was nothing significant. There was no blood on her at all.

Diana was alive at the time the ambulance carried her away, he explained, adding that he fully expected her to live. Unfortunately, she died later at the hospital.

Gourmelon also added that Diana and Dodi Al-Fayed, who were sitting in the back of the car, were not wearing seatbelts.

Friends and family have said this was pretty unusual as Diana would always buckle up while traveling.

In 2008, after an inquest into the accident, it was concluded that both Diana and Fayed were killed because their driver, Henri Paul, was driving under the influence.
