It was a regular grocery shopping day for U.S. soldier Patrick Gibson at the local Walmart store in his area when something happened.

As he stood in line to pay for the food items and diapers he purchased for his family, something happened that deeply affected Patrick and he decided to share his frustrations with the world.

In a Facebook post, Patrick revealed that he bought the grocery for his family, which consists of himself, his wife and two kids, with the little money left from his paycheck.

However, the couple in front of him wouldn’t have known what it felt like to work hard for money because they paid for their items with food stamps. Not only that; they also pulled out an EBT card out of a purse filled with wads of cash to pay an $800 bill.

To make things clearer, an EBT card is an electronic system that allows state welfare departments to issue benefits via a magnetically encoded payment card. For an individual to have such card, they must fill in a form at their local food stamp office, or online, and provide information that makes them eligible for the benefits.

Although it wasn’t wrong for the couple to have an EBT card, Patrick was pained by the fact that they looked perfectly capable to earn money for themselves rather than depend on benefits.

The straw that broke the camel’s back was when they carried their items to their brand new Hyundai Genesis. Hoping the couple would see his post, Patrick concluded his ordeal by writing:

"I just thought I would take the time to tell this person/family that you are very welcome from all of us hard working/struggling to buy food Americans that have to foot the bill for your fancy steak feast while I skip breakfast and lunch every day (so) that way my wife and children have food to eat every day because $50-$75 dollars doesn’t go very far.”

Many Facebook users seemed to agree with Patrick as they made comments about the prevalence of such actions all over America.

Others believed Patrick was too quick to judge as he didn't know the couple's background story. Although the evidence points to the couple misusing the privileges created for struggling families, it's not right to conclude that they are wrong.

Regardless, it is never right to take advantage of a welfare system set in place for struggling families. Let’s do all we can to keep our integrity.
