'People Are Mean To Other People Of Different Colors': 10-Year-Old Boy Takes A Knee During The Pledge Of Allegiance To Protest Racial Discrimination

Date February 21, 2019

A 10-year-old boy named Liam Holmes caused quite the stir when he chose to go down on one knee rather than stand during the Pledge of Allegiance at a city council meeting.

In the video, which has now gotten a lot of attention on social media, Liam Holmes could be seen taking a knee. The internet is divided, as some are wondering if this was disrespectful or if the boy should be hailed for taking a stand.

According to CBS17, Liam explained his reasons saying that:

What I did was took a knee against racial discrimination, which is basically when people are mean to other people of different colors.

Liam's father, Scott, said that even though the boy mentioned what he planned to do before the event, he wasn't sure Liam would eventually go through with it. And when the boy did, the dad was quite proud of him.

Another person who felt the boy did the right thing was the mayor. Liam said that Mayor Steve Schewel thanked him while giving an appreciation speech.

But not everyone felt that the boy should be praised. A veteran, Brandon LaRoque, said he just couldn't believe Liam's actions:

It just blew my mind that this was Cub Scouts and politics.

LaRoque went on to say that as a scout, Liam should honor God and country, and even though he understood that the boy had a right to protest and express himself, he didn't believe that had to happen during the Pledge of Allegiance.

There were arguments for both sides on social media as well. Some applauded the bravery it took for the 10-year-old to take such a stand publicly.

And others agreed with LaRoque, believing Liam had gone a little too far.

What do you think? Did Liam do the right thing by defending what he believes in? Or did he simply choose the wrong place and situation to make such a powerful statement?
