Video Shows Woman Abandoning Toddler At Stranger's Doorstep. Could She Have Made A Different Choice?

One has to wonder how a woman gets so desperate as to abandon a toddler on the doorstep of a person she does not know. Could she not have the means to care for the toddler? Perhaps she was scared? Worried? Sadly, child abandonment is something we just cannot ignore.

In 2004 alone, statistics show, there were more than 143 million orphaned and abandoned children worldwide. Can you imagine that? That's 8.4% of the children population in the world. Every day, little children are simply being dumped. Was that what happened in this case?

An unexpected drop-off

In a video clip shared by ABC, a woman was seen dropping off a toddler on a porch. It all began when another woman, who lived in that apartment, opened her door to find the toddler just standing there. The lady called 911 immediately.

She told the police that she heard a knock and went to answer the door. When she did, all she saw was the 2-year-old standing at the entrance alone. The resident of the home showed authorities the surveillance video, where they could clearly see a woman who arrived at the house in a white car.

The woman in question brought the boy to the front door, rang the doorbell, knocked on the door and then ran back to the vehicle, leaving the little boy and two bags behind. The child could be seen looking at the woman as she rushed away.

It turned out that this was not really the case of a woman abandoning her child. It was soon discovered that the woman was a friend of the child's mother, who was asked to take the child to his father. Apparently, the friend may have gotten the apartment mixed up, which led to her dropping the baby off at a stranger's home.

The dad, William Simmons, told ABC:

What if my neighbor wasn't there? If my neighbor wasn't there, my son would have been roaming up and down the street.

The parents were called to attend an emergency meeting with CPS.

What happens when a child is suddenly abandoned in your care?

Fortunately, the child in the situation above was ultimately saved. But the truth is, it's possible to feel frazzled if a baby is suddenly left in your care. According to the abandoned-baby laws, a desperate parent who wants to abandon his/her child only has to make sure that the child is placed in a place that he/she will not be harmed.

So what do you do if a desperate mom or dad considers your doorstep to be the safest place to put a child?

  1. Recognize that the baby is in safe hands with you. Don't panic. Just because the child is placed on your porch does not mean you have to keep or adopt him.
  2. The next thing you should do is provide the necessities for the child's immediate comfort and safety. For example, take the child into your home, warm him up, feed him, change clothes/diapers if unclean and so on.
  3. After the child is safe and comfortable, it's time to contact law officials. Call the police or emergency number and when they arrive, calmly explain the situation. They should be able to take it from there.

Opening the door to find an abandoned child standing there can be crazy. Take a deep breath, show some compassion and take the necessary steps to help the child.
