Brighton was born with a rare genetic disorder called Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome. This means that, even though she looks her age, she's still a newborn when it comes to her development.

However, Jake who earns $40,000 a year, actually makes too much money to qualify. They tried applying for state assistance but things were not encouraging there either. They are  60,000 in the waiting list.

At this point, it looks like the couple may have to get a divorce. This way, Maria will become a single and unemployed mother and she can qualify for Medicaid.

The family believes this is the only way they can cover Brighton's medical costs.

Jake and Maria are very distraught that it has to come to this. "We shouldn't have to make that sacrifice," the mom told TODAY.

"It's drowning us," Jake, a former army veteran said. He added that they have tried their best to keep going but things have gotten so tight they are at a loss for what to do.
