'We're So Grateful': Formerly Conjoined Twins, Abby And Erin, Are Thriving One Year After Their Life-Changing Surgery

On June 6, 2017, a set of conjoined twins underwent a life-changing separation surgery so they could each have a better chance at a more satisfying life. Today, those babies are absolutely thriving, to the joy of their parents.

Abby and Erin Delaney were conjoined at the head when they were born, on July 24, 2016. They were 10 weeks premature and each of them weighed 2 pounds and 1 ounce.

Over the months following their births, they had to stay at the hospital to undergo several surgeries aimed at separating them.

The final operation was performed a month before their first birthday, at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, and it was a success. 30 people were needed for the complex surgery, which lasted 11 hours.

Months later, the sisters who previously had difficulties with mobility, were soon sitting on their own, rolling over and even crawling.

The parents of the girls, Heather and Riley, admitted that getting to this point had been a long journey that included several twists and turns. However, they were both "thrilled to see how well the girls are doing today."

In a statement, Heather showed her appreciation for the hospital and the team of doctors as they saw the family through every step of the way.

We are so grateful for the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia team, and for the support and encouragement that our families, our friends and the community have given us during this long journey.

Dr. Jesse Taylor, a reconstructive surgeon, explained that the younger they are, the better children often heal.

At the time, the medical team's goal for Erin and Abby was to carry out the surgeries needed as soon after their birth as possible.

The parents have been keeping fans and supporters updated on the twins' development via their Facebook page. They often share pictures, videos, and posts about the girls' day-to-day life.

It's certainly been a long road to where the Delaney family is today. But from the looks of things, the little girls are happy and thriving.
