Mother Donates Heart Of Her Baby. 16 Years Later Her Selfless Act Is Paid Off When Her Daughter Needs A Life-Saving Transplant
When Lisa Mallet donated her baby’s heart 16 years ago, she could not even imagine she would be rewarded for that selfless act of kindness. Her baby girl, Jadene, had passed away after having a fit that caused a severe brain damage. In grief and despair, the parents still decided to donate her heart to save another baby’s life.
Years later, the family was struck with another tragedy. Their daughter, Ezme, who is now 4 years old, was diagnosed with aortic stenosis and needed a new heart to continue living.
Lisa and her life partner, Kevin, had to endure horrific 12 months of waiting for a transplant. For 10 of these months, the girl was in hospital, fighting for her life while attached to a mechanical organ, known as the Berlin Heart. But that device came with risks as well, and there was a chance the young patient would not make it anyway.
The mother told Mirror:
You just keep going. Esme is fighting so you do the same. There was a real low point when she was in intensive care before she had the Berlin Heart fitted. She had 28 hours of surgery in two weeks. It felt like she was literally on the
The news of a new fitting heart transplant came as a huge relief, but at the same time, Lisa was in pain for the strangers who had lost their precious child. As the surgery was a success, the family could finally return home to their normal life. Ezme was still weak and had to stay isolated for a while in order to avoid the risk of infection because of her weak immune system. However, she was uplifted because she was back in her own room, playing with her toy kitchen.
For Lisa, it’s hard to express the feeling of gratitude:
Now I couldn’t be more humble or grateful that this family did that for Esme. Their child’s heart is in my daughter, someone they don’t know. Even if I had all the time in the world and all the words in the world, I could never truly thank them enough. This family is going through the very worst experience of their lives.
The mother has been raising awareness about organ donation, claiming that one’s tragedy may become a ray of long-awaited hope for others.
