Necrotizing Enterocolitis, the bad guy

Necrotizing Enterocolitis  (NEC) is the reason our adorable heroine can't hear, but what is it?

It refers to a disease that develops when the lining of the intestines begin to die or gets severely damaged.

Depending on the severity of the case, a gaping hole may form in the intestines, causing the bacteria from the gut to trigger a widespread infection.

It is most commonly found in premature newborns and tends to progress quickly. The exact cause is not known, but the lack of oxygen during a difficult birth may be a factor.

Common symptoms are vomiting, discoloration and swelling of the abdomen, poor feeding, diarrhea, and bloody stool.

The contagious victory laughter

Mother Carol Benjamin, from Georgia, told Fox 5  that Scarlet, her 11-month-old baby, had been born three months early, weighing 2 pounds and 13 ounces.

Within a week, it was discovered that she had contracted NEC. The doctors were forced to administer drugs that are known to cause hearing loss. Quite a tough decision to make, but it had to be done.

The family kept shuttling through Athens, Augusta, and Milledgeville from their home in Madison, to find a solution for little Scarlet’s hearing.

Eventually, Atlanta Hearing Associates, in Milledgeville, swooped in to deliver the hearing aids to her.

In a Facebook video uploaded by Carol, we see Scarlet’s older sister saying, ‘Baby sister’ and the reaction to it is very touching. Scarlet begins laughing uncontrollably!

Benjamin wrote:

“It has been a LONG and emotional experience. She reacted to most sounds so we thought she could hear fairly well. After what I witnessed today, it was not as well as I thought. Hearing aids make a WORLD of difference!”

She rounded off her post with a note of thanks to Atlanta Hearing Associates and remarked that she had been crying because of the joy the hearing aids give her baby girl.

Tips for taking care of babies with hearing loss

Perhaps, you are in a similar situation. We understand that caring for a baby with a hearing loss can be difficult, so we figured we could help by giving you some pointers .

1. To aid speech and language development, your baby should wear his/her hearing aid during all waking hours;

2. Face your child when you speak, and make eye contact;

3. See a counselor or ENT specialist for help on how to communicate better with your child;

4. When feeding your baby, the ear mould may become lose and pick up atmospheric sounds, which get amplified by the microphone. Don’t worry about it affecting your baby; it doesn’t, and if you can’t stand it, you may turn it off;

5. You may use sign language with your baby to aid language development.

Don’t we love happy endings? Hearing disabilities are becoming a thing of the past, thanks to hearing aids. We are all glad Scarlet defeated NEC!
