What do you know about Down Syndrome?

Down Syndrome is a genetic condition caused by an additional gene that can be either a full or partial copy of chromosome 21.

This condition has existed for centuries. However, it was John Langdon Down, an English physician, who explicitly described it in 1866, earning him the recognition as the father of the syndrome.

Down syndrome comes in three types, namely:

  • Trisomy 21, which accounts for 95% of cases;
  • Mosaicism, which accounts for only about 1%;
  • Translocation, which accounts for 4%, and which is also hereditary.

The cause of Down syndrome is unknown, but has been linked to maternal age, that is, a woman who is 35 years or older has a higher chance of giving birth to a child with Down syndrome.

As a result of advances in medical science, people with the condition can now live up to 60 years, or even longer.

Rhett’s heartwarming reaction

Rhett Flener is a cute 3-year-old who was born on New Year’s day. His favorite color is purple and, amazingly, it’s one of the few words he can say.

He has two brothers: Warren, his big brother and Brooks, his baby brother, whom he loves to hold.

Their mum, Lee Ann Flener, told Good Morning America., that when it was time for Rhett’s third birthday, Brooks suggested getting purple icing for his cake, as that was his favorite color.

Although she knew Rhett would love his cake, she did not even fathom that his reaction would tug at many hearts.
