Mom Gets Criticised For Dressing Her Toddler Up As Julia Robert's Character In "Pretty Woman" But Insists That There Is Nothing Wrong With It

Parents always want the best for their children and, as a result, some engage their children in beauty contests. Although they do this with pure intentions so they are not likely to realize the dangers they are exposing their children to, especially toddlers.

A child behavioral psychologist, Dr. Mike Bishop, who also is the director of Wellspring Camps, explained that participating in such contests can be damaging to the child's self-esteem because toddlers are not old enough to separate the competition from reality.

The child is exposed to a false expectation of what beauty is from a young age, and that could be quite detrimental in the future.

Mom causes consternation due to her child's costume

On TLC's Toddlers and Tiaras, Wendy Dickey dressed up her toddler, Paisley, in a lycra miniskirt, a blonde wig and thigh-high vinyl boots, a combination that imitated one of the outfits Julia Roberts wore in the movie ''Pretty Woman.''

In the routine, Paisley was seen parading dressed as Vivian Ward while the movie theme song was played in the background.

This garnered in a lot of criticism from viewers, including from The Parents Television Council, who condemned the mother's action and TLC for sexualizing little children and robbing them of their childhood.

A mother whose daughter was also participating in the contest said she would never dress her kid like that, and that such action gives mothers who enroll their kids in beauty pageants a bad rap.

Wendy defends herself

Paisley's mother, however, defended herself in an interview, emphasizing that it was only meant to be comical.

She said that she chose the costume because Julia Roberts happens to be her favorite actress and 'Pretty Woman' is her favorite movie. She claimed that her daughter had no idea she was dressed like a floozy, and she did not sexualize her child in any way.

Against those who criticized her, she argued that parents dress up their young children in bikinis to the beach, where there is a higher possibility of meeting a pedophile than at a pageant.

Our intentions as parents could be good, but it is advised that we should always be on the lookout and be more thoughtful about the decisions we make. The priority should be our children having a healthy, safe and happy childhood.
