All Mikey Wanted Was A Baby Brother, And His Parents Went Through Hell Before It Finally Happened
For a long time, Mikey would always tell his parents that he wanted a baby brother. It was obviously a fervent with for the little boy. Soon, his mom and dad began working towards making that happen.
When Mikey was 3 years old, mom Jessica and her husband began trying for their second child. Jessica said they did not have any reason to be concerned since she found out about their first pregnancy one month after getting engaged.
However, months passed and Jessica did not get pregnant. They decided to go to a fertility specialist after which Jessica underwent a procedure to remove fibroids from her uterus.
On December 9, 2016, the mom was thrilled to find out she was pregnant. That day was doubly special because that was Mikey's 5th birthday.
Unfortunately, a month later, Jessica had to rush to the hospital because she was bleeding. She had miscarried at 11 weeks. It was incredibly heartbreaking, even more so when they were told the baby was a boy. Mikey could have had his wish.
As the parents struggled through the pain of losing their angel baby, they decided to take a break from trying to conceive. In fact, they stopped putting pressure on themselves and accepted that they would be happy being a family of three.
In late August 2017, Jessica began to feel out of sorts. She took a pregnancy test and was shocked to see it was positive. But she and her husband had to temper their excitement as time went on. Jessica was constantly on edge especially because she was bleeding weekly.
In November, they discovered they were having another baby boy. In January, doctors noticed the baby was measuring disturbingly small for how far along Jessica was. After doing some tests, they gave the family a heartbreaking diagnosis. There was a "severe Intrauterine Growth Restriction (IUGR) and there was a high risk of uterine demise."
Jessica was 23 weeks pregnant at the time, but the baby was measuring 5 weeks behind. The couple was given an option to terminate but they chose to fight instead.
Their goal was to get the baby to 28 weeks and, fortunately, they made it to 30 weeks and 6 days. The parents welcomed Jake Eric on March 6th. He was born weighing only 1 pound, 12 ounces. He was only 12 inches long and had to stay in the NICU until he was stronger.
For the first seven weeks of his life, Jake was fed via a feeding tube. There were many times they were scared they would lose him. Mikey was an incredible brother through it all. In fact, he got to do skin-to-skin with his baby brother at one point.
Jake spent 62 days in the NICU and he was finally allowed to go home safely. Since then, he and Mikey have been inseparable. The family is very happy with their blessing.
