The exams are taken in December when the rest of the world is celebrating festivities. The exam is formally known as the ’vestibular,’ a Latin word that means passageway, and has proved to be very stressful to students.

Eleusa de Almeida, the associate director of a chain of college prep school, described it saying:

Gabriel’s story

Gabriel Nobre is a 19-year-old young man who had an interest in medicine. The passion was born as a result of his father’s frequent visits to the hospital because of hydrocephalus. He was born in Santos, Sao Paulo.

Gabriel worked really hard to achieve his dream of studying medicine, going as far as taking pre-college night courses.

Gabriel wanted to take the vestibular, but he didn't have enough money to attend the classes that would prepare him for the exams.

Everyone could see his determination, so one of the owners of the school where he wanted to take lessons offered him a deal. Gabriel would have to clean the school in exchange for classes.
