There have been a few different types of internet challenges popping up over the years. Some were fun, others were scary and a few were even downright dangerous. But this one is a little different.

It's called the #trashtag challenge and it requires participants to take pictures of a littered public area before and after it has been cleaned up.

Facebook user Byron Román was the one who kickstarted this trend with a simple, yet powerful before/after shot.

While directing his message to 'bored teens', Byron asked that they take a photo of an area that needed cleaning and, then, when the job was done, they post an after-photo of the same location.

But it wasn't just 'bored teens' who took up this challenge. Many people from different parts of the world have been sharing their own before/after photos of an area they had cleaned up or maintained in one way or another.

Those who shared their pictures made use of the #trashtag hashtag while posting, and now hundreds of photos of this challenge can be found online.

This is not the first time the internet was used to urge people to clean up trash. In 2015, the Trashtag Project was introduced and social media users were asked to clean up their environment and post picture evidence of their efforts for a chance to win free outdoor gear from UCO (Utility, Comfort, and Originality).

The truth is, we shouldn't need a viral challenge to help us learn the importance of keeping the environment clean. We can all work together by preventing it from getting dirty in the first place.

Once people stop littering and throwing garbage everywhere, then we can eliminate the problem of messy areas rather than having to clean it up.
