Young Boy Who Suffered From Cancer Finally Meets The Bone Marrow Donor Who Saved His Life

Date October 2, 2018

An act of kindness sure makes the world a better place. This truth was confirmed when 9-year-old cancer survivor, Sawyer Dyer, ran into the arms of the hero who saved his life by donating his bone marrow.

Young Sawyer was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia in January 2017 and had to go through a strenuous chemotherapy treatment. It was a tough time for Sawyer and his family, but they had to stay strong for the kid.

The treatment lasted four months at the East Tennessee Children's Hospital, in Knoxville, and it was a harsh experience for a child to go through.

Luckily, help showed up. Sawyer had his breakthrough when a compatible donor was found. His bone marrow transplant happened at the Tristar Centennial Medical Center, in Nashville.

He responded well to treatment and was on his way to getting his life back, but he was bent on meeting the man who saved him.

Sawyer said,

'This is not fun, It would be nice to meet the person who saved my life.'

His family did their best to link Sawyer up with his hero, a wish they finally made come true. The donor's name is Kevin Schwartzel and he is from San Diego. Kevin made the decision to become a donor through the ‘Be The Match' program after having seen what these kids go through.

And when the time came for him to give of himself, he did so with joy. When asked about the reason for his decision, Kevin said,

'I'm still trying to wrestle the gravity of it because I've seen some pictures, and I know how sick these kids can get. To try to come with terms with it, my bone marrow something I was just born with, brought them out of that situation.'

Sawyer met Kevin when he was going through remission, and both had a very tight embrace which lasted for a while. The room was filled with intense emotions and it brought Sawyer's mom, Misty Dyes, to tears. Although they had never met, these two had a very strong connection.

Both sides were very grateful for the meeting, particularly Kevin who was glad he had the chance to save a person's life. Sawyer has gotten his life back, thanks to  Kevin Schwartzel's selfless act.

Although he now has a chance at a happy childhood along with his peers, he was most grateful to have met his hero.
