It is commonly said that a dog is men’s best friend. Well, that aphorism has proven true once again as two dogs have stood by their owner in one of his darkest moments and led help to him.

It seemed like a bad day for tow truck driver Martin Hall Jr. when the job for which he had driven all the way to a remote part of California did not work out. However, fate had other things in store for him.

When it was time to go back home, he was told to take a different route because the gates of the property were locked.

The description he was given mentioned one forked road, but when he got to a junction, he didn’t know which way to go. He chose one on a whim, and it brought him face to face with a black dog standing by the road, next to a flashlight.

Being an animal lover, Hall Jr. got out of his car as soon as he noticed the leash and collar. Assuming the dog was lost, he tried to befriend it by offering a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and water. But the dog would not budge.

All the while, he decided to make a video, which he intended to post online, so the owner could find the ‘lost’ dog. After trying, to no avail, to get the dog to come closer, he got into his car and began driving off.

Yet something kept nagging at him and urging him to go back. Was it divine? Perhaps.

Hall Jr. said he returned to the dog and that was when he heard a faint call for help. He followed the trail as the dog led the way until he came upon a man who had fallen on an embankment. Another dog was by the man's side. He had injured his hip had been injured in the fall.

Talking to the man, whose name was Paul, Hall Jr. learned that he had taken the dogs for a walk around 5 am, well over 7 hours earlier, before he fell down an embankment. He broke his hip and was not able to walk.

The Good Samaritan located Paul’s house and informed his wife of the unfortunate incident. From there, he called 911 and returned to the injured man with something to eat and drink while they waited for first responders.

This is a truly amazing story that teaches us to be sensitive to animals. You can never tell - you might be saving a life.
