Son Took Father With Dementia For A Ride, When He Put On The Music, The Unbelievable Happened: He Started Singing
Nothing can be compared with an unbreakable bond between father and son. Simon McDermott, from Blackburn, Lancashire, England, recorded some special outings with his father as they enjoyed long car rides around the countryside and singing karaoke together. However, those rides are more than special for both of them.
Ted McDermott was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. During his life, he was a singer who used to perform in clubs all around the area, now he has no memory of who he is. He does not recognize his son and wife most of the time, and eventually gets aggressive in words and actions. In these moments, his son takes him for a long ride, which appears to have a great therapeutic effect on him.
As they tried it for the first time, Simon realized that the ride was bringing them closer together. Once, he put on one of the backing tracks Ted used to sing a long time ago, and what happened next was amazing.
The life-long star started singing. Whenever Simon put on a different track, Ted remembered the lyrics and sang with passion, as if returning to those happy old times. The video spread around the world and gained more than 4.5 million views.
Life with Alzheimer’s changes everything, Simon McDermott told People:
As soon as you get used to one set of behaviors, something changes and then you’re right back at the start trying to learn how to deal with it.
The progressing disease has no cure, and it affects a person’s mental skills and their ability to perform simple routine actions, a result from memory loss and cognitive impairment.
The devoted son, who still enjoys every day spent with his father, released a book called The Songaminute Man, after Ted’s stage nickname during his singing career. Since the pair started their karaoke rides, they keep spreading awareness of dementia and inspiring others who have to deal with the same condition on a daily basis.
