When there is a danger, the first thing you want to do is get yourself and your loved ones to safety. But how many people actually take the time to rescue a stranger? This man did, and now he's being hailed a hero. The garbage man was supposed to be escaping the California wildfire, but he chose safe a stranded elderly woman.
Unlike the hundreds of other residents who were fleeing from the fire, Dane Ray Cummings was driving towards it, but he had a very good reason.
He told Inside Edition that his manager urged him to get to safety. However, Dane was concerned about the senior residents that he had come to know along his route and he knew they would need help getting out.

As the fire continued to get intense, Dane saw 93-year-old Margaret Newsum stranded on her doorstep. She had suffered a broken back and was unable to escape the fire by herself. The garbage man stopped immediately and carried the woman into his truck. Then he raced off as the flames wreaked havoc in the town.
Margaret, who was once a singer, said she had never seen a fire that destructive in the decades she has been alive. Thanks to Dane, though, she was able to escape the fire that tore through Paradise, North California, taking the town with it.
Dane said he was initially worried about giving a passenger a ride in his truck since it was against policy. But, then, he concluded that they couldn't possibly punish him for saving a life. Considering how he's being praised on social media, we bet his colleagues would be proud of him.
And Margaret was grateful as well. Speaking to Dane, she said:
You are the most wonderful creature that God produced.
It takes a lot of courage to save the life of someone else when yours could be in danger. But Dane is proof that heroes do exist and they very often show up during the most turbulent times.
