A Hair Appointment Ends Up Saving A Woman's Life As Hairdresser Looks Down To Find Melanoma On Her Scalp
Eileen Korey was a famous TV personality who reported Health News for WKYC Channel 3 in the 80s and 90s.
Many people recognized her for her gorgeous red hair and, to maintain her legendary look, she kept a monthly appointment with her hair colorist, Kari Phillips.
For fifteen years, Kari was the go-to person to fix Eileen's hair so, when the hair stylist noticed something odd on her client's scalp, she knew she had to raise the alarm.
Kari had often heard from her sister about the importance of always looking out for odd moles and markings on her clients' scalp.
Therefore, when she was doing Eileen's hair and she told her about the mole, the news personality made an appointment with a dermatologist.
MentalHealth dermatologist Pam Davis took a look at it and agreed that they should perform a biopsy. The results came back positive for melanoma, which is the deadliest form of skin cancer.
Even if it was a shocking experience, all in all, it was good news for Eileen. She was told that, because the cancer was caught early, it did not spread below the scalp.
So, even though Eileen needed surgery to remove the tumor on her scalp, she did not have to undergo chemotherapy treatments.
Eileen wanted to share her story as a way of bringing awareness to the way Kari caught her condition. She urged hair stylists to be very observant and speak up if they notice any sort of growth or abnormality in the course of doing their jobs.
