In 1998, a woman was jogging with her dog when she found a baby that was buried alive. The child looked to be only a few hours old and his umbilical cord was still attached.
Azita Milanian called 911 immediately, however, help did not arrive as soon as she would have liked. As she waited for the ambulance, she soothed the little baby boy and urged him to hang on.
I was telling him it would be ok. It took more than 30 minutes for help to arrive. I was pretty emotional.
After the child recovered in the hospital, he was put up for adoption. In the years that followed, Azita never forgot himd. This month, 20 years after that lucky rescue, the two were reunited.
So how did the woman and child find each other again? Well, many years after Azita found the baby, who was later named Matthew Whitaker, one of this friends' mother wrote to KIIS FM to share the boy's story.
The woman requested a DNA kit, hoping that Matthew would learn his history. When the results were revealed on air, one of the show's producers, Patty Rodriguez, remembered the story about the buried baby from 1998. She decided to try and reunite Matthew with Azita.
While heading to the studio where they were about to meet, Azita was anxious. She brought along a bag filled with clothes for Matthew and also a birthday card. She took one look at Matthew and burst into tears. She sobbed into his shirt as they hugged. "Finally, all my dreams came true," she said.
On the program, Azita shared what it had been like for her over the years. After Matthew was taken to the hospital, she visited him often, until he was finally adopted. She was heartbroken that they could no longer maintain contact and was hopeful that the boy found a good home.
Finding that baby left a lasting impression in Azita, who later set up a nonprofit organization that helps orphans around the world, named Children of One Planet. She continued to hope that Matthew would find her someday.
Azita's wish for Matthew came true. He shared how he was raised by good and kind people.
I'm here today. I've lived a great life. I was adopted into a great family.
To the mother that abandoned him, he said:
If this was your best idea, to leave me here, then thanks, because you weren't mentally fit to raise a child.
A child that would have died on the side of the road ended up living a happy life thanks to the kindness of a stranger. This just goes to show how a good person with a kind heart can bring about considerable change.
