"I Was Crying Inside That Beard": Pastor Dressed As Homeless Was Blown Away By The Treatment He Received Outside The Church

Date October 22, 2018 12:09

How hard it is for us to love someone? Could you love a homeless person? James MacDonald, famous pastor, asked himself the same question. In order to find answers he ran a social experiment, the result thereof he shared on a Facebook page.

MacDonald dressed as a homeless man, hiding his true identity under dirty shabby clothes and a long gray beard. He sat at the church’s door, surrounded by packs of his belongings. Later, when he entered the hall and dropped off the camouflage, he confessed to his congregation how shocked he was by the treatment he received.

I was crying inside that beard. I can not believe the people in this church.

How common is homelessness? It’s hard to be sympathetic and helpful when it comes to one of the most common problem strangers have.

It is very likely that we do not have any friends or family who have no place to live, so we don’t think that much about those “shadows” migrating from place to place, silently asking for help.

However, the pastor was blown away by the number of people who approached him, offering a helping hand. He could not believe how many stopped by to pray with him, invite him to come into the church, brought water, food, and money - these souls were willing to support the man in trouble.

The main message James MacDonald was sharing, was that “the closer a person is to us and the less common the struggle, the easier it is to love”. So, if we want to love others as God does, we can’t pick favorites and show goodwill only to those we can benefit from.

People in need have the same grace of God as everyone else. All we need to do is to open our hearts to see it! The video has reached 1.1 million views by now, and let’s hope it will keep spreading.
