84-Year-Old Woman Who Goes Back To College To Earn A Degree Insists: “If I Can Do It, You Can Do It!”

Date December 18, 2018

It is unusual to find older people in college classes, but it has become more and more common these days. Often, all it requires is sheer courage and determination, which is not so easy, but this woman’s story has proved it is possible.

It is not as hard as you think

For some seniors, retirement is a time to kick back and relax,\ while others see it as the time to pursue certain dreams, like getting a college degree or following a new career path.

The latter is referred to as ‘encore education.’ The Association for Psychological Science asserts that learning is great for seniors because it improves their memory.

There are still those who like the fact that learning keeps them busy. This is why many colleges have developed special programs.

In Texas, those who are 55 years and older are guaranteed a discount in the tuition fees, while those over 65 can enroll for six credits per semester free of charge as long as there’s available space.

However, such students have to maintain at least a 2.0-grade point average as undergraduates or 3.0 for graduate programs, and this 84-year-old woman is one of such students.

84 is just a number

Taking advantage of the Texas state program for those over 65, Janet Fein is set to receive her degree in Sociology.

Having a career as a secretary for 20 years, five children and eight grandchildren were only starting points for her.

The 84-year-old went back to school to accomplish a goal she held dear. She explained that she enjoyed the learning process, reading and writing papers as well as being able to relate to some of the topics in class that she had had the privilege of witnessing first-hand.

It was not a rosy journey, though, as being dependent on an oxygen tank and a walker made going to class cumbersome.

In her final semester, she had to switch to online courses because her knees gave out. Nevertheless, she didn’t give up.

Renee Brown, who is 53 years old and one of Fein’s caregivers, explained that she aims to become a vocational nurse mostly because Fein said to her,:

“Renee you can do it. If I can do it, you can do it, and you will feel so good about it.”

With her degree bagged, Fein told CBSDFW that she is considering taking on additional classes with a minor in Political Science. There is no stopping her!

You can do it

If you are considering encore education, you will find these tips helpful:

1. Have multiple study spaces. You don’t have to limit yourself to one area. Variety makes studying more fun;

2. Work on projects like research papers little by little;
