World's Oldest Conjoined Twins Were Born Nearly 70 Years Ago And They Are Still Thriving

Date July 1, 2019

When twins are born with their bodies connected, they are called conjoined twins. Usually, the connection is quite complex. In some cases, children may share vital organs, several parts of the digestive, genital and urinary systems, or a large portion of the body.

There are two theories concerning the causes of conjoined twinning:

  • The egg divides late and does not split up all the way.
  • The egg divides but then joins back together.

Although more conjoined twins survive nowadays than in the past, about 40% of them are stillborn and about 35% die within the next few days after birth.

The story of twin brothers Ronnie and Donnie, who were born on October 28, 1951, and who turn 68 in 2019, caused a great deal of bickering on the Internet.

The boys were born with separate hearts and stomachs. They each have their own set of arms and legs. However, they are connected from their sternum to the groin which means they share one set of lower digestive organs. They have literally been living face to face for decades.

Although Ronnie and Donnie spent two years in the hospital, the doctors could not guarantee that both twins would survive a separation surgery. The boys' parents decided then that it was time to take their boys home.

Their unusual appearance propelled them into the show business life. By the age of four, they were traveling and performing in carnivals with the tagline: 'Alive in person - Galyon Siamese twins.' The brothers were also quite successful with their act, making enough money to support their family.

It's not a surprise that the brothers have encountered many difficulties on their way. They, however, managed to learn to compromise.

The twins have always remained positive, though. They had one goal - to become the world's oldest conjoined twins and, in 2014, they finally achieved it, proving the world that everything is possible if you really want it.

Isn't it great?
