Krystal Dawn Pyne and her two children were out one morning when her 8-month-old daughter suddenly started crying.

Her first thought was that the girl was probably tired or hungry, but no matter how hard she tried, her daughter refused to eat. She continued crying and that's when Krystal noticed there was some kind of "blackness' in her mouth.

As her little girl became inconsolable, the mom knew that something much more serious was happening.

She immediately called for help and after doctors attended to her, they realized what must have happened. A nurse had earlier mentioned to Krystal that her own daughter showed a similar mark after she had sucked on a caterpillar.

As soon as she said this, Krystal was struck with that possibility, because she knew they had a lot of those insects outside their home. She brought this up with the doctor who agreed that that was probably the cause.

The little girl eventually had to be sedated and they had to remove pieces of caterpillar tentacles, hair and spines from her mouth.

Thankfully, this story had a happy ending as they were able to remove most of the caterpillar pieces that were stuck in the girl's mouth. They couldn't get it all out, though, as there were some microscopic pieces that had to be left behind.

But Krystal said her daughter has been doing just fine.

The mom used the opportunity to let other parents know that those 'fuzzy caterpillars' are much more harmful than they appear.

And in injuries like this, it only takes a split second for things to go terribly wrong.
